Born in Moscow on 16 April 1941, he graduated from the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) as an actor in 1964 and as a director in 1972. He made his screen debut in 1961 and has appeared in more than eighty films and television productions. His early roles include Sergey Bystryakov in *Wings* (1966) and the Cossack Officer in *The Red and the White* (1967). He is also known for performances in *War and Peace* (1968), *An Unfinished Piece for Player Piano* (1977) and *What Men Talk About* (2010).
