## Biography

Shamim Sarif (born 24 September 1969) is a British novelist, screenwriter and film director. She was born in London to parents of Indian South African heritage and studied English literature at Royal Holloway, University of London, followed by a master's degree at Boston University.

Sarif has written and directed feature films adapted from her own novels, including *The World Unseen* (2007), *I Can't Think Straight* (2008) and *Despite the Falling Snow* (2016). She also wrote and directed the feature *Polarized* (2023). With her wife Hanan Kattan she co-founded the production company Enlightenment Productions. Her television directing credits include an episode of the Netflix series *You* (2018).

She was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2019 and is a member of BAFTA and the Directors Guild of Canada.
