## Fi1m on Shane Meadows

> Shane Meadows makes ordinary company feel funny, familiar and suddenly dangerous. We rate his ear for group behaviour and his work with actors more highly than his storytelling, which can leave a compelling person only partly understood.

In *Dead Man's Shoes* (2004), the men around Richard laugh with whoever seems strongest. Their grubby comedy gives us time to recognise them before their cruelty becomes harder to dismiss. Meadows is good at this: letting a group seem ridiculous without making it harmless. We were unnerved by Paddy Considine's dead-eyed stare, because he makes a pause in conversation feel like the moment before an assault. The Derbyshire setting helps; these men belong to an ordinary place, not a glamorous criminal underworld.

His early features, including *TwentyFourSeven* (1997), were co-written with Paul Fraser. *A Room for Romeo Brass* (1999) brought Considine into the work, in a story that moved between childhood friendship and danger. Meadows's use of rehearsal and semi-improvisation helps explain why his groups can seem to have known each other long before filming began. His Midlands estates and suburbs matter because the people seem to belong there.

*Dead Man's Shoes*, which Meadows wrote with Considine, shows both the value and the limits of that approach. Considine gives Richard, an ex-soldier, enough sensitivity to make his anger frightening, while Gary Stretch's Sonny and Stuart Wolfenden's Herbie help the gang remain more than targets. Yet these men are more convincing together than they are fully understood apart. Meadows sometimes asks disgust to stand in for characterisation, and Richard's inner life stays frustratingly vague. His reluctance to make revenge comforting gives the film its force, even when the writing leaves too much for Considine to supply.

The breakthrough was *This Is England* (2006), followed by television sequels from 2010 to 2015. The later work includes *The Virtues* (2019) and *The Gallows Pole* (2023), so there is considerably more to explore than the revenge thriller. We would follow him for the performers, while remaining wary of stories that do not develop as fully as the situations promise. Start with *Dead Man's Shoes* if the genre appeals, and give its quiet exchanges your full attention.
