## Fi1m on Shawn Ryan

> Shawn Ryan is at his most persuasive when blunt dialogue gives a strong ensemble something difficult to play. *The Shield* earns our recommendation, though his taste for aggression can leave scenes sounding tougher than they need to.

In *The Shield* (2002), people speak bluntly and the exchanges move quickly. Shawn Ryan's police drama makes that directness a reason to keep watching, even when its sustained aggression begins to wear. We recommend it for the ensemble as well as the writing, with enough happening beyond the lead to reward a long commitment. We were gripped by *The Shield*, because Michael Chiklis gave Vic Mackey the force to hold that ensemble together. Ryan supplies a difficult central character and gives the other actors room to matter.

Ryan wrote for *Nash Bridges* and *Angel* before creating *The Shield*. He has described the latter as a reaction to the populism of *Nash Bridges*, which helps explain why its determination to be rough can feel so pronounced. The corrupt Mackey also belongs to a recurring interest in compromised law-enforcement figures. The Rampart police scandal informed *The Shield*, though the performance and dialogue matter more to its grip than knowing where the story began.

Ryan's fellow writers on *The Shield* include Glen Mazzara, Kurt Sutter and Adam Fierro, and the dialogue's strengths and excesses belong to that shared work. At its strongest, the plain speech keeps a scene moving and gives the actors something definite to play. It is less effective when every exchange seems obliged to sound tough. We sometimes wanted a quieter passage, simply so the next harsh line could make its proper impression. Too many hard lines together start to sound alike, whatever the character is meant to be saying.

The military procedural *The Unit* (2006) brought a showrunning partnership with David Mamet; Ryan later developed *S.W.A.T.* (2017) and created *The Night Agent* (2023). Some critics find the later series more conventional, and that is a useful warning against treating every Ryan credit as a promise of another *The Shield*. Nor does a recognisable formula automatically make the writing lazy. What we value in his work is the strong ensemble and the direct speech, provided there is more behind a line than the wish to sound hard. Start with *The Shield*, but be prepared for a programme that seldom lowers its voice.
