## Biography

Sheb Wooley was an American actor and singer. Born Shelby Fredrick Wooley on 10 April 1921 in Erick, Oklahoma, he worked as a cowhand in his youth before pursuing music and radio, which led to film roles from the early 1950s.

He is known for his performances as Ben Miller in *High Noon* (1952), scout Pete Nolan in the television series *Rawhide* (1959–1965, including one story credit), Travis Cobb in *The Outlaw Josey Wales* (1976), and Cletus Summers in *Hoosiers* (1986). Wooley also recorded the 1958 novelty hit "The Purple People Eater" and appeared in numerous Western films through the 1990s. He died on 16 September 2003.
