## Fi1m on Shemar Moore

> Shemar Moore has spent two decades playing the man in the tactical vest who also asks how you are. It is a narrow trade and he is good at it; the question is whether anyone has asked him to do anything else.

Watch almost any hour of *Criminal Minds* (2005) and the pattern shows itself. Derek Morgan is the agent sent through the door first, and ten minutes later he is the one on the phone to Penelope Garcia, trading nonsense with her while the rest of the team stands over a body. That is Shemar Moore's trade in a sentence. He plays the strong man who is also the kind one, and he plays it without seeming to think either half is remarkable.

He came to it sideways. A college baseball player who was injured, then a model, then eleven years as Malcolm Winters on *The Young and the Restless* from 1994, with a stint hosting *Soul Train* on the side. Daytime was his training, and it shows in the useful ways: he hits his mark, he finds the camera, he can carry a scene of pure exposition without looking bored by it. Eleven seasons of *Criminal Minds* followed, then eight of *S.W.A.T.* (2017) as Sergeant Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson, and now a spin-off, *S.W.A.T. Exiles* (2026), that promises a darker version of the same man.

We found *Criminal Minds* wearying, one grim identical week after another, and we noticed that the minutes we did not resent were mostly his. Kirsten Vangsness gives Garcia a mouth that runs faster than Morgan's, and their phone calls were the only stretches in which the show seemed to be about people rather than procedure. When the writers finally turned the profiling on Morgan himself, in "Profiler, Profiled", Moore did the difficult thing and let a man's history show without announcing it. He is better at carrying a wound than at describing one, which is the right way round for television.

The limitation is that nobody has asked him for anything much different. Moore himself has called Hondo "Derek Morgan from Criminal Minds on steroids", and he meant the stakes and the pressure as much as the muscle, but it is also a fair description of the career: the same vest, more to carry. Hondo's job is to stand between his neighbourhood and his department, and Moore gives him the tiredness for it, but the part is the old part with the weight turned up. The film work, Randall in the *Sonic the Hedgehog* pictures and Cyborg's voice in a run of DC animations, is supporting and fine and tells us nothing new.

So we know what he does with a badge. We do not know what he does without one, and in his mid-fifties the chance of anyone finding out is narrowing. The spin-off promises grit and new recruits. We have heard that from procedurals before, and it usually means the lighting.
