Born on 16 January 1929 in Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture, he joined the Bungakuza theatre troupe in 1952, initially as a directorial assistant before becoming an actor. He made his film debut in 1953 in Tadashi Imai's *An Inlet of Muddy Water* and left Bungakuza in 1963 to work with other troupes. Kōyama appeared in numerous films and television productions over more than six decades. He is credited as Ohashi in *Black Rain* (1989) and had roles in *Kwaidan* (1965), *Samurai Rebellion* (1967), *Kill!* (1968), *The Man Who Stole the Sun* (1979), *Antarctica* (1983), *Godzilla vs. Destoroyah* (1995), *Azumi 2: Death or Love* (2005) and *Beyond Outrage* (2012). He was also known for his work in NHK taiga dramas and the series *The Guardman*.
