## Biography

Shirley Ann Russell was a British costume designer. Born Shirley Ann Kingdon in London on 11 March 1935, she studied fashion at Walthamstow College of Art and the Royal College of Art.

She collaborated on numerous films with her then-husband, director Ken Russell, including *Women in Love* (1969), *The Devils* (1971), *Tommy* (1975) and *Valentino* (1977). Other credits include *Yanks* (1979), *Reds* (1981), *Hope and Glory* (1987), *Gulliver's Travels* (1996) and *Enigma* (2001). She won a BAFTA Film Award for *Yanks* and received Academy Award nominations for *Agatha* (1979) and *Reds*.

Russell died on 4 March 2002.
