Shonda Rhimes is an American television writer, producer and showrunner. She created and wrote for the medical drama series *Grey's Anatomy* (2005–present) and its spin-off *Private Practice* (2007–2013). She also created the political thriller *Scandal* (2012–2018).

Rhimes was born on 13 January 1970 in Chicago, Illinois. She graduated from Dartmouth College in 1991 and earned an MFA from the University of Southern California School of Cinema and Television in 1994. Earlier credits include the screenplay for the film *The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement* (2004) and the teleplay for *Introducing Dorothy Dandridge* (1999). She founded the production company Shondaland.

Rhimes later created series including *Bridgerton* (2020–present) and the miniseries *Inventing Anna* (2022) and *Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story* (2023). She was the first African American woman to create three television dramas that each reached 100 episodes.
