## Biography

Shuntarō Tanikawa (also credited as Shuntaro Tanikawa) was a Japanese poet, translator and screenwriter. He was born in Tokyo on 15 December 1931 and died there on 13 November 2024.

Tanikawa co-wrote the screenplay for Kon Ichikawa’s documentary *Tokyo Olympiad* (1965) alongside Natto Wada, Yoshio Shirasaka and Ichikawa. He contributed screenplays to other films including *The Wanderers* (1973) and *Hi no tori* (1978), and wrote the lyrics for the theme song of *Howl’s Moving Castle* (2004). He is best known for more than sixty collections of poetry, beginning with *Two Billion Light Years of Solitude* (1952), and for his translations of Charles Schulz’s *Peanuts* and Mother Goose rhymes into Japanese.
