## Fi1m on Siân Brooke

> Sian Brooke makes uncertainty worth watching. Her Grace Ellis in *Blue Lights* gives a familiar police drama much of its tension and warmth, and we recommend the patient work that makes this beginner worth worrying about.

In *Blue Lights* (2023), Grace Ellis remains inexperienced long enough for it to matter. Brooke keeps that difficulty present, making it something the series has to contend with beyond the introductions. Grace is a mid-career recruit, and the distinction matters: being an adult does not make someone practised at a new job. We worried about her because Brooke never lets competence feel guaranteed. It is a persuasive lead performance in a police drama we recommend.

Her television breakthrough came with her part in *Sherlock* (2017), after years of smaller parts in crime dramas. There was substantial stage work alongside them, including Ophelia opposite Benedict Cumberbatch in *Hamlet* (2015). Parts in *Trying* (2020) and *House of the Dragon* (2022) took her into comedy-drama and fantasy before the lead in *Blue Lights*. The sustained attention of a leading role suits the patient acting we value in Grace: the series gives her room to remain unsure.

Brooke works well as part of the ensemble. Alongside Katherine Devlin's Annie Conlon and Nathan Braniff's Tommy Foster, she makes learning the job feel like continuing work, not a brief preliminary to being reliably right. Devlin and Braniff are particularly good at leaving their characters vulnerable without asking for sympathy. Brooke does not need to compete with that; the three performances give us officers whose competence still has to be learnt.

The rookie viewpoint does sometimes make explanations conspicuous; Brooke cannot make every line of instruction sound like spontaneous conversation. It is a reservation about a tense, humane series, rather than a reason to pass it over. Her performance gives us someone to care about while the programme explains its procedures. Start with *Blue Lights* for Brooke, allowing for the occasions when the programme seems to be training us as well.

## Biography

Siân Brooke is a British actress. Born Siân Elizabeth Phillips in Lichfield, Staffordshire, in 1980, she adopted the professional name Brooke to avoid confusion with the established actress Siân Phillips.

She trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating in 2002. Her early career included substantial theatre work, notably with the Royal Shakespeare Company and as Ophelia opposite Benedict Cumberbatch in the 2015 Barbican production of *Hamlet*.

Brooke is known for her television roles as Eurus Holmes in *Sherlock* (2017), Queen Aemma Arryn in *House of the Dragon* (2022), and Grace Ellis in *Blue Lights* (2023–), the last of which earned her a BAFTA TV Award nomination for Leading Actress.
