## Biography

Sid Silvers (1901–1976) was an American actor, comedian, lyricist and writer. He began his career in vaudeville in the early 1920s as the comedy partner of Phil Baker, heckling from the audience, and the act later inspired the 1951 film *The Stooge*. He made his Broadway debut in the 1925 revue *Artists and Models* and contributed to several stage musicals and revues in the late 1920s and early 1930s.

Silvers appeared in supporting roles in films including *Bottoms Up* (1934), *Born to Dance* (1936) and *Broadway Melody of 1936* (1935), in which he played Snoop and shared the screenplay credit. He contributed comedy material to other MGM productions such as *The Wizard of Oz* (1939) and wrote the screenplay for *For Me and My Gal* (1942). In later decades he worked mainly in stage, radio and television.
