## Biography

Sidney Bernstein was a British media executive and film producer. Born in Ilford in 1899, he built a career in cinema exhibition before expanding into production and television. He co-founded the London Film Society in 1925 and later established the Granada Group, serving as its chairman.

In the mid-1940s Bernstein formed Transatlantic Pictures with Alfred Hitchcock. He served as uncredited producer on Hitchcock's *Rope* (1948) and *Under Capricorn* (1949). He was also involved in the production of documentary material on German concentration camps during and after the Second World War.

Bernstein founded Granada Television in 1954 and remained a key figure in British commercial television. He was created a life peer as Baron Bernstein of Leigh in 1969 and died in London in 1993.
