## Biography

Sidney Carroll (25 May 1913 – 3 November 1988) was an American screenwriter who worked primarily in television. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he graduated from Harvard University in 1934. He served as a war correspondent during the Second World War before beginning his writing career in 1949.

Carroll co-wrote the screenplay for the film *The Hustler* (1961) with Robert Rossen, an adaptation of Walter Tevis’s novel that earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. His other screen credits include the story for *Gambit* (1966) and the screenplay for *A Big Hand for the Little Lady* (1966). He also wrote for anthology series such as *Alfred Hitchcock Presents* and *Omnibus*, and adapted *The Count of Monte Cristo* for television in 1975. Carroll received an Edgar Award in 1957 and Emmy Awards for documentary writing.
