## Biography

Simon Wincer is an Australian film and television director. Born in Sydney in 1943, he attended Cranbrook School from 1950 to 1961. After leaving school he worked as a stagehand at HSV Channel 7, later becoming a floor manager and occasional director.

He began directing Australian television series in the 1970s and made his feature debut with *Snapshot* (1979). His early films include *Harlequin* (1980) and *Phar Lap* (1983). In the United States he directed the miniseries *Lonesome Dove* (1989), for which he won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, and the family film *Free Willy* (1993). Other credits include *Quigley Down Under* (1990), *Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man* (1991), *The Phantom* (1996) and *The Cup* (2011).
