Smári McCarthy is an Icelandic-Irish politician, innovator and information activist. Born on 7 February 1984 in Reykjavík, he co-founded the Icelandic Digital Freedom Society in 2008 and served as executive director of the International Modern Media Institute from 2010 to 2013. He has been a member of the Icelandic parliament for the Pirate Party since 2016.

McCarthy appears as himself in the 2013 documentary *We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks*, credited as Self - Icelandic Digital Freedom Society. He has also featured in other documentaries on WikiLeaks and worked on projects relating to transparency, privacy and digital rights.
