## Fi1m on Sofia Helin

> Sofia Helin plays women who do not know what other people want from them, and she refuses to let us laugh at them for long. Her Saga Norén in *The Bridge* asks nothing of us across four series and gets our sympathy anyway.

In the first episode of *The Bridge* (2011), Saga Norén changes her shirt in the middle of the open-plan office of the Malmö police because it needs changing. Nobody on screen laughs. Sofia Helin does not play it for one either; she buttons up and gets on with the case. That is the habit she brings to every scene as Saga: say the true thing, do the practical thing, leave the reaction to whoever is watching. Hans Rosenfeldt's writers never put a diagnosis on the character, and Helin never plays one. She plays a woman who is good at her job and baffled by everything around it.

She had been a lead in Sweden for some years before that. *Dalecarlians* (2004) was the breakthrough, *Arn: The Knight Templar* (2007) put her in a historical one, and neither travelled the way Saga did. Then came the leather trousers and long coat Kerstin Halvorsson gave her for all four series, and the green Porsche, and from 2011 to 2018 she was Saga. Since the show ended she has gone the other way, into international productions: Crown Princess Märtha in *Atlantic Crossing* (2020), parts in *Mystery Road* (2018) and *Alex Rider*. We have not reviewed those and will not pretend to a view of them.

What works is that she will not soften. Beside Kim Bodnia in the first two series, one ordinary detective and one who is not, Saga's flatness looks like comedy for an episode and then like something harder. From the third, opposite Thure Lindhardt's Henrik Sabroe, who has something badly wrong at home, the scenes run at a different temperature, two damaged people rather than one, and Helin adjusts by a degree and no more. She has said that you cannot give Saga social skills, "because she would never know how to do that other than in a very mechanical way", and the performance keeps to that. Saga does not learn. She tries, and Helin lets us watch the trying. The shirt is where it got us: we laughed, then saw that nobody on screen was laughing and that Helin had not asked us to, and we felt caught out. The show does that again and again, and it only works because she never once winks.

The one criticism that has followed her is typecasting, that since *The Bridge* she has been handed intense, inward women, and it is not one we can test, having reviewed nothing of hers since. The other complaint belongs to the show, not to her: the third series is crowded with more suspects than it can hold, and it takes the tighter fourth to recover. Through all of it the plots strain and she does not. If you have two series in you, stop after the second and you will have seen the best of it. If you go on, go on for her.

## Biography

Sofia Helin is a Swedish actress. She was born on 25 April 1972 in Hovsta, Sweden, and grew up in Linghem near Linköping.

Helin trained at Calle Flygares theatre school from 1994 to 1996 and graduated from the Stockholm Theatre Academy in 2001. She made her breakthrough in 2004 with the leading role in *Masjävlar* (Dalecarlians), for which she received a Guldbagge Award nomination. She later played Cecilia Algotsdotter in the *Arn* films (2007–2008).

She is best known internationally for portraying Saga Norén in the Danish-Swedish series *The Bridge* (2011–2018).
