## Biography

Sol Kaplan (1919–1990) was an American composer of film and television scores. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he graduated from the Curtis School of Music and performed as a concert pianist at Carnegie Hall before composing his first film score in 1941. During the Second World War he wrote music for the film units of the U.S. Army Signal Corps and the Office of Strategic Services.

Kaplan scored dozens of films, including *Niagara* (1953), *Titanic* (1953), *Salt of the Earth* (1954) and *The Spy Who Came In from the Cold* (1965). For the television series *Star Trek* (1966) he composed the music for the episodes "The Enemy Within" and "The Doomsday Machine", with his cues tracked across other instalments. His Hollywood career was interrupted in the 1950s after he appeared before the House Committee on Un-American Activities and was blacklisted. He was married to actress Frances Heflin; their son Jonathan Kaplan became a film director.
