## Fi1m on Sônia Braga

> Sonia Braga brings dramatic weight to roles built around her sensuality. We rate her ability to make a strong impression without overstatement, especially when a film lets her be unsettling rather than merely desirable.

In *The First Omen* (2024), Sonia Braga keeps smiling as Sister Silva, the nun who runs the orphanage. We grew uneasy at those smiles because the apparent reassurance made her harder to trust. Arkasha Stevenson gives her a supporting role, and Braga makes it count without needing to dominate the film. The final stretch becomes dutiful, but her performance is a good reason to watch how the people around the young novice behave, as well as what happens to the novice herself.

Her earlier casting often put sensuality first, particularly around the breakthrough of *Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands* (1976). The dramatic strength was there too, and reducing those roles to sexual appeal misses an important part of what she offered. *Kiss of the Spider Woman* (1985) brought her wider international attention and led to Hollywood work in the 1980s and 1990s.

Héctor Babenco gives her three parts in *Kiss of the Spider Woman*: Leni Lamaison, Marta and the Spider Woman. It is a film we recommend warmly, but William Hurt and Raúl Juliá provide its most convincing emotional work, making an unlikely closeness believable. The fantasy passages occasionally feel overworked, a reservation that matters when considering a performer so associated with those images. Braga’s multiple roles are an attraction, but they are not the reason the prison drama holds us.

In *Aquarius* (2016), her leading performance as Clara is grounded and emotionally detailed. Together with her supporting role as Domingas in *Bacurau* (2019), it marks a substantial return to Brazilian cinema after the Hollywood years. The lead in particular offers a useful corrective to a reputation too easily reduced to sensuality: there is time to attend to the acting. For a sustained look at what she can do, start with *Aquarius*.
