## Biography

Sooni Taraporevala is an Indian screenwriter, photographer and filmmaker. Born in Mumbai in 1957 to a Parsi family, she studied English and American literature at Harvard University and cinema studies at New York University.

She wrote the screenplay for *Salaam Bombay!* (1988), directed by Mira Nair, on which she also worked as a still photographer. She later wrote the screenplays for Nair’s *Mississippi Masala* (1991) and *The Namesake* (2007). Taraporevala has also written *Such a Long Journey* (1998) and *Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar* (2000). Her directorial credits include *Little Zizou* (2008) and the Netflix film *Yeh Ballet* (2020).

She is the author of the photography book *Parsis: A Photographic Journey*. Taraporevala received the Padma Shri from the Government of India in 2014.
