He graduated from the Aarhus Theatre school in 1976 and remained with the theatre until 1980. From 1980 to 1987 he was a member of the Royal Danish Theatre, appearing in numerous stage productions including *Hamlet*, *King Lear* and *A Midsummer Night's Dream*. Spanning had recurring television roles in series such as *TAXA*, *The Killing* (2007) as Kornerup and *Borgen* (2010–2013) as Lars Hesselboe across three seasons. Film credits include Münter in *A Royal Affair* (2012) and Henrik Hvid in *The Shooter* (2013). He provided the Danish voice of Lord Voldemort in the *Harry Potter* films. In 1995 he was appointed Knight of the Dannebrog.
