## Biography

Stanley Baker was a Welsh actor and film producer. Born William Stanley Baker on 28 February 1928 in Ferndale, Rhondda, Wales, he died on 28 June 1976 in Málaga, Spain. He began his career with stage work and small film roles in the 1940s, later appearing in supporting parts in films such as *Captain Horatio Hornblower R.N.* (1951) and *The Cruel Sea* (1953).

Baker gained prominence in the 1950s and 1960s for roles including Henry, Earl of Richmond in *Richard III* (1955), Modred in *Knights of the Round Table* (1953), and Attalus in *Alexander the Great* (1956). He played Pvt. 'Butcher' Brown in *The Guns of Navarone* (1961) and Lt. John Chard in *Zulu* (1964), which he also produced. Other credits include *Accident* (1967), *The Girl with a Pistol* (1968), *A Lizard in a Woman's Skin* (1971) and *Zorro* (1975).

Baker formed production companies and worked as a producer on several of his films. He received a knighthood in 1976.
