He was born on 16 July 1926 in Long Island, New York, and began performing in vaudeville and on the Major Bowes Amateur Hour before signing with 20th Century Fox in 1941. His early film roles included an appearance as Morton Rodakiewicz in *The More the Merrier* (1943). Clements appeared in the East Side Kids series as "Stash" and later replaced Leo Gorcey as group leader Stanislaus "Duke" Coveleskie in the final seven Bowery Boys comedies from 1956. He is also noted for roles in *Going My Way* (1944) and *Salty O'Rourke* (1945).
