We rate that care highly, though *Center Stage* shows how his discussions of performance can interrupt what Maggie Cheung has already made us feel. Maggie Cheung is playing Ruan Lingyu, and Stanley Kwan Kam-Pang wants us to consider how she is doing it. In *Center Stage* (1991), dramatised scenes sit beside documentary-style conversations about performance, giving us time to question how readily we accept an actor as someone who once lived. He was born on 9 October 1957 in Hong Kong. After studying mass communications at Hong Kong Baptist College, he joined TVB before directing his first feature, *Women* (1985). His films include *Rouge* (1987), *Center Stage* (1991), *Red Rose White Rose* (1994), *Hold You Tight* (1998) and *Lan Yu* (2001). *Rouge* won the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Director, and *Lan Yu* won the Golden Horse Award for Best Director. *Hold You Tight* received the Alfred Bauer Prize and Teddy Award at the Berlin International Film Festival.
