## Biography

Stefan Artur Schnabel (2 February 1912 – 11 March 1999) was a German-American actor. Born in Berlin, he was the son of pianist Artur Schnabel and contralto Therese Behr Schnabel. He left Germany in 1933 and moved to the United States in 1937, becoming an original member of Orson Welles's Mercury Theatre company.

Schnabel worked extensively in theatre, radio, film and television. He appeared on Broadway and with the Old Vic, and played Dr Stephen Jackson on the CBS soap opera *Guiding Light* from 1966 to 1981. His film roles include Col. Ilya Ranov in *The Iron Curtain* (1948), the First Secretary in *Firefox* (1982) and a party guest in *Green Card* (1990). He was married to actress Marion Kohler from 1947.
