## Fi1m on Stefen Fangmeier

> Stefen Fangmeier brings an effects supervisor’s care for believable spectacle to *Eragon*, but gives its people too little attention. We find more to value in his technical work than in his sole feature as director.

A dragon choosing its rider ought to give a fantasy adventure somewhere to begin. In Stefen Fangmeier’s *Eragon* (2006), the promise is there, but the people barely have time to become interesting before the story moves them along. We were worn down by how little personality they were allowed, even when the spectacle was competently handled. Peter Buchman’s adaptation of Christopher Paolini’s novel supplies familiar ingredients without enough reason to care about them. Jeremy Irons brings a welcome dryness, though one performance cannot make the others matter.

Fangmeier came to directing after more than fifteen years at Industrial Light & Magic, where his work included visual effects supervision on *Twister* (1996) and *Saving Private Ryan* (1998). His collaborators included Dennis Muren, and his work frequently involved complex environmental and creature effects. His preference was for effects that looked convincing without drawing attention away from the story. His maritime effects work on *Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World* (2003) led directly to the offer to direct *Eragon*.

That background makes *Eragon*’s weakness frustrating, because Fangmeier wanted audiences to feel something beyond awe at the effects. He favoured locations and practical sets over extensive bluescreen, seeking a natural look with cinematographer Hugh Johnson. It is a sensible approach to making a fantasy setting feel inhabited. Yet the film hurries through its characters and still feels slow, because there is so little about them to hold our attention. We would have welcomed less haste and more time with the people, even if it meant giving us less to look at.

After *Eragon*, Fangmeier returned primarily to effects supervision, with *Wanted* (2008) among his feature credits and later television work including *Game of Thrones* and *3 Body Problem* (2024). There is no need to treat that work as a lesser occupation. We would be interested in another directing attempt that gave its characters room to develop. For a clearer sense of his abilities, start with the effects work on *Master and Commander*.
