She became closely associated with the work of director Claude Chabrol, appearing in around two dozen of his films.

Audran is known for her roles as Alice Sénéchal in Luis Buñuel's *The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie* (1972), for which she shared a BAFTA Award for Best Actress, and as Babette in Gabriel Axel's *Babette's Feast* (1987). Other notable credits include *The Butcher* (1970), *Violette Nozière* (1978), for which she won a César Award, and *The Big Red One* (1980). She received the Silver Bear for Best Actress for *Les Biches* (1968).

She was married to actor Jean-Louis Trintignant from 1954 to 1956 and to Chabrol from 1964 to 1980; their son Thomas Chabrol is also an actor. Audran continued working as a character actress into the 2000s and died in 2018.
