## Fi1m on Stephanie Beatriz

> Stephanie Beatriz made her name by giving nothing away. Rosa Diaz frightens a whole precinct with a leather jacket and a flat stare, and since *Brooklyn Nine-Nine* ended she has moved, largely, into work where the stare is not available and only the voice is.

Watch Rosa Diaz enter a room. She does not speak, she does not look at anyone for long, and within a few seconds somebody else has started talking to cover the silence. That is the joke, and it is Beatriz's joke: the other detectives are written to fill the air, and she is written to withhold it. Alexis Jacks puts her in a leather jacket so you know what she is from the doorway, and Beatriz does the rest by doing very little, holding a line a beat longer than a comedy actor usually dares.

She came to it from the stage, by way of Stephens College and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and then small parts in *The Closer*, *Southland* and *Modern Family*. Then 2013 happened twice. In *Short Term 12* she plays Jessica, one of the staff in a foster home built around Brie Larson, and she does what that film needs, which is to be a person in the building rather than a turn; we scored it 86 and did not single her out, and we mean that as a description of the part, not a complaint. The same year she walked into the Nine-Nine, where she stayed for eight seasons and directed one episode in 2019.

The show, in our view, runs on formula and holds its laughs for six seasons before thinning, and Rosa is a test of what a long run does to a character built on refusal. The one who says nothing has the least room to move, so the writers kept finding reasons for her to speak, and the best of them were the pairings with Joe Lo Truglio's Boyle, two people with nothing in common shut in a car. We laughed hardest, across all those seasons, at the moments Rosa gave away one degree more than she meant to, a flicker in the face when Boyle would not stop, because Beatriz had spent so long giving away nothing that a flicker counted as a confession.

Since then the work has gone mostly to the voice: Carla in *In the Heights* (2021), Mirabel in *Encanto* (2021), Vaggie in *Hazbin Hotel* (2024–). There is something odd about an actor whose whole comic method was a face that would not move choosing animation, where there is no face at all and everything has to be carried in the throat. We have not reviewed those films and will not pretend to judge them here, but it is plainly a deliberate change of instrument, not a drift.

"I'll be happy if my name is always connected to Rosa Diaz," she said in 2021. It probably will be. We would like to see, and not only hear, what else she can do when nobody has handed her the jacket.
