> Stephen Boyd brought a baritone and broad shoulders to historical spectacle. We rate him for the less obvious work in *Ben-Hur*: making a reunion uncomfortable enough to give Charlton Heston's reserve a purpose.

In the reunion in *Ben-Hur* (1959), Stephen Boyd makes Messala's attention to Charlton Heston's Judah feel uncomfortably personal. Heston's formality might otherwise leave the scene stiff; Boyd gives him a reason to hold himself in check. We were absorbed by their reunion because the attraction between the men is plain without being explained. Their meeting matters more than either character would care to admit. That is the Boyd performance we would send someone to first, for the way he makes another actor's restraint worth watching.

*The Man Who Never Was* (1956), in which he played Patrick O'Reilly, and the western *The Bravados* (1958) preceded his international recognition as Messala. Historical and military figures became familiar assignments for a broad-shouldered actor with a deep baritone. He played Livius alongside Sophia Loren in *The Fall of the Roman Empire* (1964), then Grant in *Fantastic Voyage* (1966). After the mid-1960s, he moved towards European and independent productions. We would be wary of treating that change itself as a verdict on his acting.

The recurring problem in William Wyler's film is how readily those exchanges give way to solemn instruction. Boyd and Heston show that a historical adventure can ask us to take its people seriously without having them announce every feeling. When the moral lessons start repeating, the pace slackens and the actors are left waiting for another useful exchange. That matters to our view of Boyd: a commanding voice is useful casting, but it is no substitute for dialogue that lets him respond to somebody.

Boyd described himself as a character actor rather than a star, a judgement that makes sense beside Messala. He played heroes as well as villains, but the ruthless man in *Ben-Hur* gives us the firmer reason to recommend him. The interest lies in how personally he takes the reunion, beyond his ability to look formidable. ## Biography

Stephen Boyd (born William Millar) was a Northern Irish actor. He is best known for portraying Messala opposite Charlton Heston in the 1959 epic *Ben-Hur*, a performance that earned him the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture.

Boyd appeared in around sixty feature films, often in historical epics and westerns. Among his other notable credits are *The Man Who Never Was* (1956), *The Bravados* (1958), *The Fall of the Roman Empire* (1964), *Genghis Khan* (1965), *Fantastic Voyage* (1966) and *The Bible: In the Beginning...* (1966). He died of a heart attack in Northridge, California, on 2 June 1977.
