## Fi1m on Stephen Dillane

> Stephen Dillane makes a supporting character feel worth following, without drawing attention to the effort. We rate his restraint, though even an actor this attentive needs a script that gives him enough to do.

In *The Outrun* (2024), Stephen Dillane plays Andrew, Rona's father, in wild high spirits and in a bed he cannot leave. He is persuasive in both, without making either state seem like an actor's demonstration. We were moved by his performance because he makes those changes matter even when the film gives Andrew too little attention. There is a supporting character here we want to know better, in a film built almost entirely around Saoirse Ronan. Saskia Reeves gives Rona's mother Annie a steadiness that the script follows more patiently, which makes the limits on Andrew harder to miss.

That understated approach had an early leading outlet in *Welcome to Sarajevo* (1997), where he played Michael Henderson. His screen work increased from the late 1990s, following an established stage reputation earlier that decade, and Leonard Woolf in *The Hours* (2002) brought wider recognition. Television made him more prominent through Stannis Baratheon in *Game of Thrones* (2012), while *The Tunnel* (2013) gave him a lead as Karl Roebuck, alongside Clémence Poésy. His naturalistic approach suits the introspective and conflicted men he is frequently asked to play.

The difficulty comes when that discretion is asked to compensate for thin writing. In Nora Fingscheidt's *The Outrun*, Andrew has less room to be a person in his own right than Rona does. Dillane is good at both extremes; he cannot supply the missing time with the character. Ronan carries the film without visible strain, so this is not a complaint about the leading performance. We simply wanted more room for the people around her, and his Andrew makes that shortage especially apparent.

We would not choose *The Uprising* (2026) simply for Dillane's Simon Sudbury. Paul Greengrass gives it a convincing medieval setting, but the relentless action does too much of the storytelling. Andrew Garfield supplies a persuasive lead; our reservations concern how the film moves, not a lack of conviction at its centre. Try *The Outrun* for Dillane, but do not expect the film to be as interested in Andrew as we were.
