## Fi1m on Stephen Kay

> Stephen Kay's strength is actor-led genre television. We value his attention to performance, especially within an ensemble, while remaining wary of giving one director too much credit for a series as good as *The Shield*.

Michael Chiklis holds the centre of *The Shield* (2002), but the other actors give us reasons to keep watching beyond him. We felt its tension because the ensemble kept us involved, even when the series insisted too heavily on its roughness. Kay directed six episodes of Shawn Ryan's police drama. We rate the series highly, while keeping its collective achievement separate from what a single director can claim.

His feature career began with *The Last Time I Committed Suicide* (1997), before the Sylvester Stallone remake *Get Carter* (2000) and the horror film *Boogeyman* (2005). The latter two drew mixed reviews for conventional storytelling. For *Boogeyman*, Kay described a preference for implied scares and giving scenes time, rather than supplying constant explicit shocks. That approach asks actors to sustain unease while the audience waits, which makes his interest in performance particularly relevant. We favour the patience, but it does not answer the complaint about familiar stories.

From the mid-2000s, television became his principal work, with episodes of *The Shield* and *Sons of Anarchy* (2008). His continuing collaboration with writer and creator Taylor Sheridan includes *Yellowstone* (2018) and *Landman* (2024). On *Landman*, the job includes handling large-scale action alongside relationships between generations of a family. His acting background also informs his attention to what a character wants and how their feelings develop. We welcome that emphasis in programmes with several storylines competing for attention.

For us, the reason to follow Kay is the prospect of well-handled ensemble acting, not the expectation that his name will make familiar material feel new. *The Shield* offers that pleasure, with a compelling lead and supporting performances that reward the time spent away from him. Start there, allowing for a police drama that occasionally insists rather too loudly on its toughness.
