## Biography

Stephen McGann is an English actor born on 2 February 1963 in Kensington, Liverpool. He began his professional career in 1982 in the West End musical *Yakety Yak* and has worked extensively in British theatre and on screen.

McGann is best known for portraying Dr Patrick Turner in the BBC series *Call the Midwife* (2012–present). Earlier television roles include Sean Reynolds in *Emmerdale* (1999–2002) and appearances in *Casualty* (2004 and 2007). He has also performed in stage productions such as *Blood Brothers* (1989), *'Art'* (2003) and the original West End cast of *Footloose* (2006).

He is one of four acting brothers, alongside Joe, Paul and Mark McGann. McGann has been married to screenwriter Heidi Thomas, creator of *Call the Midwife*, since 1990; they have one son.
