## Fi1m on Stephen McKinley Henderson

> Stephen McKinley Henderson is a supporting actor worth paying attention to: quiet, unshowy and capable of making a gentle question uncomfortable. The decency he brings to *Civil War* is persuasive, though the film leans too hard on it.

In *Beau Is Afraid* (2023), Stephen McKinley Henderson asks soft, leading questions as Beau's therapist. We felt uneasy during that early exchange because the questions are so gentle and so plainly leading. It is a useful correction to the idea that he is there merely to be wise and comforting. Ari Aster's film loses its shape as it goes on, but Henderson's brief scene tells us more about Beau than much of what follows.

The substantial stage work includes August Wilson's Turnbo in *Jitney* (2000) and Jim Bono in *Fences* (2010), the latter a Broadway revival with Denzel Washington. His film work expanded after that revival, through *Lincoln* (2012), the screen version of *Fences* (2016) and Greta Gerwig's *Lady Bird* (2017). The continuity is his usefulness within an ensemble: an unadorned actor who need not make a supporting part conspicuous for it to matter.

Sammy in Alex Garland's *Civil War* (2024) is the veteran journalist who cannot run any more and comes anyway. Henderson gives him a tired decency that makes his willingness to come feel costly, rather than merely dutiful. Garland turns to him whenever the film needs a conscience, and Henderson makes that reliance easy to understand. We accepted the film's silence about the war's causes without quite liking it; Sammy's presence cannot do all the work the writing leaves him.

Denis Villeneuve's *Dune* (2021) gives him Thufir Hawat, within science fiction we found rewarding but sometimes wearing in its solemnity. We would start elsewhere for a sense of what Henderson can do with a scene. The therapist in *Beau Is Afraid* is a useful reminder that his soft delivery need not be comforting, and that directors can ask more of him than dependable wisdom. Try *Civil War* for Henderson, but do not expect his character's decency to settle the questions Garland declines to answer.
