## Fi1m on Stephen Williams

> Stephen Williams favours patient direction and tightly controlled images. We value the care he brings to complicated television, even when the programmes around him cannot leave their strongest scenes alone.

In *Lanterns* (2026), the green of a ring looks wrong against grey fields and car parks. Stephen Williams shares directing duties with James Hawes and Geeta Patel, and all three allow the scenes time to settle. Gregory Middleton, Florian Hoffmeister and Armando Salas keep the photography subdued; the restraint makes that one bright colour look intrusive. Williams is a director we value for care and patience, though the programmes around him do not always make good use of either. This one has fine actors and a plot that keeps interrupting them.

The features make his interest in outsiders clearer. He wrote and directed *Soul Survivor* (1995), then spent much of his career in television, joining *Lost* in 2004 and becoming a co-executive producer. Returning to features with *Chevalier* (2022), about Joseph Bologne, he again approached a story from the outsider's position. Historical research mattered, but so did making the period drama feel immediate.

*Watchmen* (2019) offers a more specific clue to his directing than a long list of credits. In the episode *This Extraordinary Being*, he uses black and white, wide lenses and seemingly unbroken takes. Those choices give the episode a firm visual character without requiring a different flourish in every scene.

We warmed to *Fallout* (2024) because Ella Purnell and Walton Goggins gave us people worth following through its grotesque wasteland. The comic ugliness is easier to take when there are people to care about. It is funny, carefully made television, although its wandering plot sometimes tests the goodwill earned by the cast. Of the three programmes discussed here that we have reviewed, it is the one we recommend most readily.

We are less persuaded by *Cape Fear* (2026), where Williams is one of nine directors across ten episodes. Javier Bardem and Amy Adams give it something to watch, but the short novel is stretched further than it can bear. That is a substantial weakness, though we cannot fairly lay it at one director's door any more than we can give Williams sole credit for *Fallout*. Start with the wasteland, provided a wandering plot does not spoil an evening for you.
