## Fi1m on Steve James

> Steve James stays with people long enough for their worries to change. We rate his patience and his skill at keeping complicated lives clear, especially when *Hoop Dreams* lets family concerns interrupt the basketball.

In *Hoop Dreams* (1994), a school result can matter as much as a basketball game. William Gates and Arthur Agee are Chicago teenagers with sporting ambitions, but James keeps their families and financial pressures in view. He lets us follow their hopes without treating everything off the court as a delay. We were moved by the family conversations because they made it impossible to regard either boy's prospects as his only concern.

Much of that patience is made in the editing. James, William Haugse and Frederick Marx keep the boys' developing lives clear without forcing their setbacks to match. The 174 minutes give ordinary problems time to register, and we seldom felt the length. Ben Sidran's music keeps the games exciting without making every difficulty sound like a crisis, while James's narration supplies information and then leaves us space to decide what to think.

The film was his breakthrough after short documentaries and editing work with Chicago's Kartemquin Films. Narrative features followed, including *Prefontaine* (1997), before *Stevie* (2002) marked a return primarily to documentary. *The Interrupters* (2011) continued his attention to Chicago through a year with people working to interrupt violence. The later series *America to Me* (2018) and *City So Real* (2020) extended a career in which spending time with people, often years, is central to the work.

There is a limit to what this approach can do, even in *Hoop Dreams*. The question of who will succeed remains compelling, and James is less searching about the idea that success in competition might put everything right. His attention to the families does much to correct this: their needs cannot all be met by better basketball. We would still like him to press harder on that assumption, rather than leave the family scenes to complicate it.

Start with *Hoop Dreams*. It is an exceptional film even for those of us with no interest in basketball. Give it an uninterrupted evening; the schoolwork and family worries need that time as much as the games.
