Orestis in *Landscape in the Mist* is the performance to start with. Orestis, the young man with the lorry in *Landscape in the Mist* (1988), speaks to two runaway children as if they were people. Almost nobody else in that film does. Stratos Tzortzoglou plays him with troubles of his own kept where the children cannot reach them, and the girl, Voula, on the edge of adolescence, watches him without his appearing to notice. That is the whole performance: a man being looked at who does not act being looked at. It was his first film, and it is still the one to begin with. Karolos Koun found him in 1987 at his Art Theatre school in Athens, and within a year he was on screen twice, for Angelopoulos and for Pantelis Voulgaris in *The Striker with Number 9* (1988). The broader caveat belongs to the career: the safety net of being a Greek star does not travel, and the English-language record of what he did with the leading roles is thin, so our view rests on one supporting part and a reputation we have mostly had to take on trust.
