## Biography

Stuart Wurtzel is an American production designer and art director. He was born on 9 August 1940 in Newark, New Jersey. He studied at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University), receiving a B.F.A. in 1962 and an M.F.A. in scenic design in 1964, and worked as a resident stage designer at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco for four years before moving into film.

Wurtzel’s film credits include production design on Woody Allen’s *The Purple Rose of Cairo* (1985) and *Hannah and Her Sisters* (1986), the latter earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Art Direction. Other film work encompasses *Hair* (1979), *Stepmom* (1998), *Enchanted* (2007), *Marley & Me* (2008) and *Mr. Popper’s Penguins* (2011). In television he has designed miniseries including *Angels in America* (2003), for which he received an Emmy Award.

He is married to production designer Patrizia von Brandenstein.
