## Biography

Sy Bartlett was an American screenwriter, novelist and producer. Born Sacha Baraniev in Mykolaiv in 1900, he moved to the United States as a child and later trained at the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University before working as a newspaper reporter.

He began writing for Hollywood in 1933 and received credits on more than two dozen films. With Beirne Lay Jr. he wrote the novel *Twelve O'Clock High* (1948) and its 1949 screen adaptation. His other screenplay credits include *The Big Country* (1958). In the 1950s he turned to producing and co-founded Melville Productions with Gregory Peck.

Bartlett died in Hollywood in 1978.
