As Charlie Cheswick in *One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest* (1975), Sydney Lassick is fretful and trying, and the performance needs both qualities. We were moved by Cheswick because his whining makes his vulnerability uncomfortable to watch, without making it any less real. Lassick does not ask us to pretend that being frightened always makes a person agreeable.

The part was his breakthrough after small film and television appearances stretching back to the late 1950s. In Miloš Forman's film, the men on the ward have to matter as individuals, and Lassick helps keep them from becoming merely a cause. His willingness to be peevish is useful to that ensemble: Cheswick is not made lovable for our convenience. *Carrie* (1976) puts that capacity for unpleasantness to a different use. Horror parts in *Alligator* (1980) and *The Unseen* (1980), followed by the lackey Gopher in the crime thriller *Deep Cover* (1992), kept him in supporting work without much escape from eccentricity. Sydney Lassick was an American character actor. Born in Chicago, Illinois, on 23 July 1922 to Russian Jewish immigrant parents, he served in the US Navy during the Second World War and studied drama at DePaul University before beginning his acting career in the late 1950s.

Lassick appeared in numerous films and television series. He is known for his role as Charlie Cheswick in the 1975 film *One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest* and as Mr Fromm in *Carrie* (1976), as well as guest roles including in *The X-Files*. He died in Los Angeles on 12 April 2003.
