## Biography

Sylvain Itkine was a French actor, playwright and theatre director. He was born on 8 December 1908 in Paris and appeared in supporting roles in several films directed by Jean Renoir, including *La Chienne* (1931), *The Crime of Monsieur Lange* (1936) and *Grand Illusion* (1937), in which he played Lieutenant Demolder.

Itkine also worked as an assistant director and provided a voice for *The Tale of the Fox* (1941). During the Second World War he joined the French Resistance in Lyon. He was arrested in August 1944, tortured by the Gestapo and executed on 20 August 1944 at the Fort de Côte-Lorette near Saint-Genis-Laval.
