## Biography

T. E. B. Clarke (1907–1989) was a British screenwriter best known for his work on the Ealing Studios comedies of the late 1940s and early 1950s. Born Thomas Ernest Bennett Clarke in Watford, he began his career as a journalist before joining Ealing as a writer in 1943. His scripts often developed from an absurd premise to a farcical but logical conclusion.

Among his Ealing credits are *Hue and Cry* (1947), *Passport to Pimlico* (1949), *The Blue Lamp* (1950), *The Lavender Hill Mob* (1951), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, and *The Titfield Thunderbolt* (1953). He was appointed OBE in 1952. After Ealing ceased production, Clarke continued to write for film, including the screenplay for *Sons and Lovers* (1960), co-written with Gavin Lambert and nominated for an Academy Award, and *The Horse Without a Head* (1963).
