## Fi1m on Takashi Shimura

> Takashi Shimura makes authority convincing by showing how much attention it takes. We value him most when his quiet concentration gives other actors room, especially as the patient leader holding *Seven Samurai* together.

In *Seven Samurai* (1954), Takashi Shimura makes the recruitment of a fighting company look like work that needs doing properly. His Kambei Shimada thinks before he acts, and that steadiness matters more than any display of force. We were moved by how seriously he takes the villagers’ need for help, without making every exchange sound like an emergency. As the company forms, we trust him because he gives the task his full attention. It is an exceptional performance of leadership, with no need to keep announcing who is in charge.

His collaboration with Akira Kurosawa began with *Sanshiro Sugata* (1943) and continued through 21 of the director’s films, ending with *Kagemusha* (1980). Doctor Sanada in *Drunken Angel* (1948) and the woodcutter in *Rashomon* (1950) came before the bureaucrat Kanji Watanabe in *Ikiru* (1952). The change from Watanabe to Kambei is striking: the same concentration serves a vulnerable bureaucrat and a leader others can trust. Beyond Kurosawa, his parts included Dr Kyohei Yamane in *Godzilla* (1954), among his work in kaiju films.

Shimura was not always so restrained. Kurosawa thought he sometimes strained for intensity, with *Ikiru* among the examples. His vulnerability there is affecting, but the effort can become too visible. In *Seven Samurai*, his concentration has a practical purpose: there are people to choose and villagers who need help. He makes Kambei’s judgement convincing without suggesting that the job comes easily.

Alongside frequent co-star Toshirō Mifune, that steadiness is particularly valuable. We found Mifune overemphatic at times in *Seven Samurai*, but Shimura gives the ensemble a centre without competing for attention. He leaves room for excitement and unruliness while keeping the villagers’ predicament in view. That is why a film so attentive to preparation can remain absorbing before the fighting begins. Start with *Seven Samurai*, and give the recruitment your attention rather than waiting for the swords.

## Biography

Takashi Shimura was a Japanese actor. Born Shōji Shimazaki on 12 March 1905 in Ikuno, Hyōgo, he appeared in more than 200 films between 1934 and 1981. He is credited in 21 of Akira Kurosawa's 30 films, the largest number for any actor, with lead roles in *Drunken Angel* (1948), *Rashomon* (1950), *Ikiru* (1952) and *Seven Samurai* (1954) as Kambei Shimada.

Shimura also played Professor Kyohei Yamane in Ishirō Honda's *Godzilla* (1954) and its sequel *Godzilla Raids Again* (1955). He received the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 1974 and the Order of the Rising Sun, 4th Class, Gold Rays with Rosette in 1980. He died in Tokyo on 11 February 1982 from emphysema.
