## Fi1m on Takehiro Hira

> Takehiro Hira makes authority credible without insisting on solemnity. We rate the steadiness he brings to *Giri/Haji*; *Rental Family* shows how little even a good performance can do when the writing keeps looking elsewhere.

In *Giri/Haji* (2019), Takehiro Hira keeps Kenzo Mori steady while the programme changes style around him. His restraint gives us someone to follow through Joe Barton's crowded crime story, even when the gang intrigue starts to drag. Kelly Macdonald's Sarah helps him keep the human exchanges from becoming pauses between plot developments. We warmed to Kenzo when Barton's humour interrupted the serious business; Hira's steadiness makes room for both.

*Atsuhime* (2008) brought him recognition as Tokugawa Yoshinobu, and his repeated work with Takashi Miike included Ii Naotaka in *Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai* (2011). Authority figures and antagonists recur in his casting, which often calls for quiet intensity. *Giri/Haji* marked his international breakthrough.

*Rental Family* (2025) shows what happens when the writing gives him less. As Shinji Tada, who runs the agency supplying Brendan Fraser's Phillip with work, Hira suggests a life the film does not spend enough time exploring. Mari Yamamoto, playing Aiko Nakajima, is similarly short-changed, though both performances are good. Hikari's film keeps returning to Phillip, leaving the Japanese characters chiefly there to be helped by him. We wanted more of Shinji, but an actor making us curious about a character cannot supply the scenes a script has omitted.

That is a limitation of the material, and it matters when choosing where to start with Hira. Barton's writing is the more rewarding match because it allows duty and family to emerge through humour as well as serious talk. Hira can keep us attentive without insisting that every exchange announce its importance. Start with *Giri/Haji*, allowing a little patience for the gang intrigue; *Rental Family* is too quick to turn away from him.

## Biography

Takehiro Hira (平 岳大) is a Japanese actor born on 27 July 1974 in Setagaya, Tokyo. The son of actors Mikijirō Hira and Yoshiko Sakuma, he was raised in Japan until the age of 15, attended Moses Brown School in Providence, Rhode Island, and graduated from Brown University.

He made his theatrical debut in 2002 in *Rokumeikan* by Yukio Mishima and worked with his father, playing Iago opposite Mikijirō Hira's Othello. He received early recognition for portraying the last shogun Yoshinobu Tokugawa in the NHK taiga drama *Atsuhime* and has appeared in several films by Takashi Miike, including *Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai* (2011).

Hira played the lead in the 2019 British series *Giri/Haji*, for which he received a BAFTA nomination. His international credits include *Lost Girls & Love Hotels* (2020), *Snake Eyes* (2021), *Gran Turismo* (2023), *Shōgun* (2024) as Ishido Kazunari, for which he was Emmy-nominated, and *Rental Family* (2025) as Shinji Tada.
