## Biography

Tamar-kali, also credited as Tamara Colletta Brown, is an American composer and singer-songwriter based in Brooklyn, New York. Born in Brooklyn with family roots in the Sea Islands of South Carolina, she received classical choral training as a child before performing in the Afropunk and punk scenes.

She made her feature-film composing debut with *Mudbound* (2017) for director Dee Rees, winning the World Soundtrack Award for Discovery of the Year. Subsequent scores include *The Assistant* (2020), *Shirley* (2020), *The Last Thing He Wanted* (2020) and *Come Sunday* (2018). She has frequently collaborated with female directors and incorporates classical, punk and Gullah Geechee musical elements in her work.

Tamar-kali has also composed for documentaries such as *John Lewis: Good Trouble* (2020) and created orchestral pieces including the Sea Island Symphony.
