## Fi1m on Tchéky Karyo

> Tchéky Karyo brought humanity to men who looked as though they expected to be obeyed. We value the ambivalent mentor of *Nikita* and the patience of his television work; routine villain parts asked too little of him.

As Bob in *Nikita* (1990), Tchéky Karyo makes a mentor's authority feel complicated. He has the physical presence for Luc Besson's polished violence, but Bob's ambivalence gives us a reason to watch him beyond the expectation of trouble. We enjoyed watching him hold his own alongside Anne Parillaud, whose anger and vulnerability carry so much of the film. He gives us someone else worth attending to without weakening her place at the centre.

Besson's emphatic styling needs performers who will not disappear into it. Jean-Hugues Anglade and Jeanne Moreau help Karyo keep *Nikita* from becoming entirely dependent on its lead, and this is the sort of supporting work we value in him. There are limits to what their presence can achieve: the plotting takes shortcuts, and the romance sometimes asks for feelings it has not earned. We still recommend it for the performers.

The wider recognition of *The Bear* (1988) and *Nikita* led into a run of international supporting parts during the 1990s. In *GoldenEye* (1995), he plays Dmitri Mishkin in Martin Campbell's brisk, entertaining Bond revival. We rate the film, though it is not our first recommendation for understanding Karyo's appeal. The same period also brought the villain roles, including *Bad Boys* (1995), that too often left him with little chance to distinguish the character. Those parts made narrower use of his abilities than Bob had.

Television later gave that authority more time to develop, through Julien Baptiste in *The Missing* (2014–16) and *Baptiste* (2019–21). The patience and quiet wisdom of his work in *The Missing* made a welcome change from the routine threats. A longer part allowed those qualities to matter, rather than asking his physical presence to establish everything at once. Start with *Nikita*; turn to *The Missing* for the patience that the thriller parts so often left unused.

## Biography

Tchéky Karyo (born Baruh Djaki Karyo) was a Turkish-born French actor and musician. He began his career on stage in classical and contemporary plays after training at the Cyrano Theatre and the National Theatre of Strasbourg.

He moved into film in the 1980s and received a César Award nomination for Most Promising Actor for *La Balance* (1982). He became known for roles including Bob in Luc Besson's *La Femme Nikita* (1990), Dmitri Mishkin in *GoldenEye* (1995), Fouchet in *Bad Boys* (1995) and Jean Villeneuve in *The Patriot* (2000). He also appeared in *The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc* (1999) and the BBC series *The Missing*.

Karyo died on 31 October 2025 aged 72.
