## Biography

Ted Childs is a British television producer, writer and director. Born Edward Samuel Childs on 26 December 1934 in Hackney, London, he began his career in 1962 as a programme director with ABC Weekend TV. He worked on factual programmes including episodes of the current affairs series *This Week* and directed and produced episodes of the documentary series *The World at War* (1973–1974).

Childs was one of the founders of Euston Films, the Thames Television production company. There he produced *The Sweeney* (1975–1978) and other series and films. In 1984 he became Controller of Drama at Central Independent Television and later Managing Director of Central Films, serving as executive producer on series including *Inspector Morse* (1987–2000), *Soldier Soldier* (1991–1995) and *Kavanagh QC* (1995–2001), and films such as *Goodnight, Mister Tom* (1998). He has won one BAFTA award.
