Born Thomas Lanier Williams III on 26 March 1911 in Columbus, Mississippi, he studied at the University of Missouri, Washington University in St Louis and the University of Iowa, from which he graduated in 1938. After years of limited recognition, he achieved success with the stage play *The Glass Menagerie* in 1944. This was followed by *A Streetcar Named Desire* in 1947 and further works including *Cat on a Hot Tin Roof* (1955) and *The Night of the Iguana* (1961). Williams wrote the screenplay, in collaboration with Oscar Saul, for the 1951 film adaptation of *A Streetcar Named Desire* directed by Elia Kazan.
