He began his career in the 1950s as a draughtsman at Rank Studios and worked as assistant art director on *Lawrence of Arabia* (1962). Marsh shared Academy Awards for art direction on *Doctor Zhivago* (1965) and *Oliver!* (1968). He received further Academy Award nominations for *Scrooge* (1970) and *Mary, Queen of Scots* (1971), and BAFTA nominations including for *The Hunt for Red October* (1990). His later credits as production designer include *Basic Instinct* (1992), *The Shawshank Redemption* (1994), *Clear and Present Danger* (1994), *The Green Mile* (1999) and *Rush Hour 2* (2001).
