## Fi1m on Terence Stamp

> Terence Stamp can make a character’s impatience funny without making them look foolish. We rate him most when that restraint has something human behind it: Bernadette’s tired professionalism in *Priscilla*, or Wilson’s grief in *The Limey*.

Wilson speaks in rhyming slang, and Eduardo keeps asking him to say it again in English. In *The Limey* (1999), Stamp gets dry comedy from a man who has come to Los Angeles to investigate his daughter’s death. He makes few concessions to anyone else’s comfort. We never need him to become more agreeable, though the thin script sometimes leaves that fixed manner doing too much of the work. Steven Soderbergh understands how much interest there is in watching Stamp remain still while other people try to make sense of him.

His early stardom did not settle into one kind of work. The film debut in *Billy Budd* (1962) was followed by *The Collector* (1965) and *Theorem* (1968), the latter making use of his sexual mystery. A long break preceded his return as General Zod in *Superman* (1978) and *Superman II* (1980). The character roles that followed eventually put that remote presence to warmer use, allowing impatience and restraint to suggest someone we might enjoy spending time with.

In Stephan Elliott’s *The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert* (1994), Bernadette is a middle-aged trans woman for whom performing has become a job, with the irritations any job brings. Stamp gives her impatience weight without asking for a laugh after every line. We can enjoy her sharpness and still believe in the person who has to go back to work. Sue Blainey’s editing keeps the journey moving, but Elliott’s heavier doses of sentiment make us wish he would leave Stamp alone. The performance already supplies the warmth those passages are trying too hard to manufacture.

Soderbergh finds a different way into him by borrowing footage from Ken Loach’s *Poor Cow* (1967) for Wilson’s memories in *The Limey*. Seeing Stamp’s young face beside the older one moved us more than we expected, because the years between them make Wilson’s loss feel personal. Flack’s repeated images sometimes make us conscious of the editing doing work the performance should do, but the simple cut between those two faces needs no further emphasis. Choose *Priscilla* for the warmer performance, and do not let its louder jokes distract from Bernadette’s working life.
