He appeared on stage from 1912 to 1945 and performed in more than 170 feature films from 1913 onwards, beginning with silent films. He is known for roles including Josaphat in *Metropolis* (1927) and Inspector Groeber in *M* (1931), both directed by Fritz Lang, as well as King Gunther in *Die Nibelungen: Siegfried* (1924) and *Die Nibelungen: Kriemhild's Revenge* (1924). During the Third Reich he was a member of the Advisory Council of the president of the Reichsfilmkammer.
